TTRKD Kyu Level Rank Progression

Like most traditional karate systems, Tatsu Te Ryū Karate-Dō uses a colored belt system to identify a student's rank and progression through the art.  Each promotion marks a new level of technical ability, personal growth, and responsibility.

When Tatsu Te Ryū Karate-Dō was established, the Founder intentionally adopted a twelve kyū ranking structure to symbolize the Twelve Disciples of Jesus Christ.  Just as Christ's disciples grew through faithful instruction, discipline, and perseverance under their Master, students are expected to mature through dedicated training, humility, and continual learning.  The twelve ranks serve as a reminder that every martial artist is first a student.

Each belt color was also chosen with purpose.  Rather than using colors solely to distinguish rank, every belt within Tatsu Te Ryū carries a biblical symbolism and is paired with a passage of Scripture explaining its significance.  As students advance, they not only develop their martial skills but also learn the spiritual meaning behind the belt they have earned.

Promotion is never automatic.  Every rank must be earned through time, effort, disciplined training, and formal evaluation before qualified instructors.  In Tatsu Te Ryū Karate-Dō, a belt is never given, it is earned through demonstrated knowledge, ability, character, and perseverance.

TTRKD Dan Level Rank Progression

Like most traditional karate systems, Tatsu Te Ryū Karate-Dō recognizes ten degrees of black belt. While many martial arts simply use these ranks to distinguish experience and seniority, TTRKS also associates these grades with the Ten Commandments, reflecting the Founder's desire to reinforce the biblical principles of obedience, integrity, and moral responsibility alongside technical excellence.

Earning a black belt is not the end of one's training, but the beginning of a lifetime devoted to the study of the art. Each successive dan rank represents continued growth in knowledge, leadership, character, and service to both the dojo and the martial arts community.

Within Tatsu Te Ryū Karate-Dō, there are two distinct paths of black belt progression. The first is the Yudansha – Seito (Black Belt Student) path, intended for those who continue to advance their personal training and technical development. The second is the Yudansha – Shōgō (Black Belt Instructor) path, designed for those who accept the responsibility of teaching, mentoring, testing, and preserving the standards of the ryūha.

Although both paths continue through the same ten dan grades, the instructor route carries additional responsibilities and recognition. Those who pursue the Shōgō path receive distinctive rank belts, traditional instructional titles, expanded teaching authority, and specialized training in leadership, instruction, student evaluation, and dojo administration. In Tatsu Te Ryū Karate-Dō, advancement is measured not only by martial skill, but also by the willingness to faithfully serve others and preserve the legacy of the art.
